SOUP KITCHEN PROGRAM

According to data from study “Strategy for reduction of poverty” in our country 10,5% of population live on the edge of poverty line. Throughout the network of the local branches, the Red Cross of Serbia is animating corporations and citizens to help to the most vulnerable citizen in their areas, within the limits of their capabilities.

The Red Cross of Serbia with help of Government of Serbia, the Norwegian Red Cross and local self government had included 18.750 of beneficiaries throughout the soup kitchen program, that was realize from June of this year in 58 municipalities in Serbia. In period from March 1 to June 31 2006, the Red Cross of Serbia had distributed 1.311.294 of hot meals to the most vulnerable citizens of Serbia. Every beneficiary of soup kitchen program received one hot meal per day, six days per week. Researches that were done recently are showing that this meal was the only meal during the day for 70% of the users.

At this moment, the Red Cross with help of local donors and local authorities is distributing hot meals to users in twenty cities: Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Sabac, Novi Sad, Zajecar, Smederevo…

Needs for this kind of support still exist in Serbia. The Red Cross of Serbia in cooperation with Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities have submitted a claim to Serbian Government and other donors for support in implementation of the Soup kitchen program for 19.390 users in 58 cities during the winter season 2006/2007.
